What Your Job Will Be Like We are seeking an RD Systems Research Analysis professional with biosecuritybiodefense or transportation energy domain expertise, who will take a broad systems perspective to informing strategies, priorities, and requirements for technology solutions. The successful applicant will join our multidisciplinary team of systems analysts, whose studies provide decision insight to customers in ill-defined or complex multi-domain problem areas. As part of our team you will Apply critical thinking using a diverse set of technical skills and expertise, and communicate options, insights, and trade-offs to customers in a concise way that enables action Provide technical depth and insight to analysis problems in the biosecuritybiodefense andor transportation energy domains Formally define problems, formulate requirements, develop technical approaches, gather information from a variety of sources, and apply analytical and modeling methods to design and objectively evaluate proposed solutions. Programming experience and familiarity with relevant analysis andor mod-sim tools would be beneficial Contribute to multidisciplinary systems analysis teams addressing other domains of national secuirty, and enable connectivity between operational organizations and Sandia's broad and deep research and development teams Access to knowledge and data in this arena will require a security clearance. Travel is expected to meet with sponsors and to support successful execution of programs On any given day, you may be called on to Lead projects and also contribute effectively on research teams Work with customers to understand needs and propose solutions Conduct innovative research and Present results as appropriate at open conferences or classified meetings Qualifications We Require Bachelor-s degree in relevant discipline plus 5 or more years of experience or higher degree (Master's, PhD) in relevant discipline Evidence of relevant research expertise in the form of technical publications, presentations, software, andor knowledge of applications Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire Master-s degree or PhD in relevant discipline Expertise in one or more of the following design and analysis of complex systems, decision analysis, risk analysis, international security and policy, expert elicitation, facilitation, communications with non-technical audiences, data analytics, machine learning, and operational or policy guidance development. Experience working in the biosecuritybiodefense or transportation energy domains Software development competence in at least one programming language and software engineering proficiency Evidence of professional service and leadership to the community, such as service on program committees, workshop organization, andor editorial or review work A proven ability to frame and tackle complex andor ill-defined multidisciplinary problems Background in solving practical problems in science and engineering that involve encounters with real-world data, especially large data sets Demonstrated ability to communicate well in informal (one-on-one) and formal (seminar) environments. About Our Team The Systems Research Analysis team is part of a six department System Analysis and Engineering Group in the Homeland Security Defense Systems Center. We provide national leaders with reliable, unbiased and comprehensive information on viable engineering and strategy options, and on the effectiveness, risks, benefits, and potential unintended consequences of those options. We are a multidisciplinary group with a strong science and engineering emphasis, skilled at applying a broad systems perspective to national and global security challenges. Our work is focused on a broad range of topics in national security including nuclear weapons, homeland security, and transportation energy. Homeland security work includes analyses, simulations, and prototype technology deployments which address defense against biological, chemical, radiological, and nuclear terrorism and emerging cybersecurity threats. Nuclear weapons work includes stockpile studies, surety systems analysis, cost estimation, and future stockpile planning. Projects span DHS, DOE, DoD, and internal sponsors. Projects range from months to years in duration, with teams forming in dynamic collaborations across the Group with organizations throughout the laboratory to draw upon world-class technical expertise. Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
